Transponder Key Programming

Transponder Key Programming

We first saw their introduction in 1993 in European cars and now Electronic transponders are now common use in all new cars on the road today. These keys add significantly to the protection of ignition locks of cars, preventing theft.

What exactly is a transponder key?

In general terms a transponder key is a manufactured accessory that comes with a car and provides the transmission link between the car and the key. It means that a key can be programmed to start one specific, individual car thereby reducing opportunities for theft.

It works by a little transmitter that is in the head of the key and when inserted into the ignition, the key transmits an electronic request to the engine and the immobiliser box, which then allows the car to start.

If the car does not recognise the serial number as the one it was programmed with, it won’t start, and obviously you won’t be able to drive it.
